I am a big fan of Far Cry series and will do all I can to review this game as harsh as possible because there is nothing worse than to disappoint a fan, nothing easier to break a fan favorite game, and nothing harder than to make a fan contempt with a sequel. Nevertheless, do take my review with a grain of salt.
Story wise, I did not get that feeling of Vaas, in such it did not show me that crazy lunatic that has a mysterious way of looking into people and things. Nevertheless, any attempt by the developers to recreate a character like Vaas will be so obvious that it will a game breaker for me. So I liked the idea of a cult who are religious in their attempt to save people in a way that most people would see it as enslave people. It always puts me into thinking are they wrong for trying to save humanity, or am I wrong for trying to stop them. It keeps me into thinking is this what it feels for those poor souls that live under ISIS rules, where death looks you into the eye everyday and their is no escape from this nightmare. I love how Far Cry made me think so widely about our life and how fragile it is and how easy everything can go south. It also shows how powerful is religion is and how some can twist any religion into a terrorizing scheme to run their agendas.
Gameplay wise, there is no dull game in Far Cry 5, constant battles all over the place inviting you to join or just turn the other cheek. I found myself going from fighting the cult, to rescuing civilians, to hunting game, to fishing, to exploring and still havent done half of the first region out of 3 main regions in the start of the game. The fact that you were given a bow at the start of the game was a nice subtle push towards hunting. Also early on in the game you will stumble across across a fishing rod, which is another introduction to the first-time fishing gameplay in Far Cry series. The weapons in Far Cry 5 are beautifully made and sound great with each having its own customized attachments and skins, making every gun you have a unique experience by itself. While the introduction of melee weapons was a welcome addition, its not just some frosting, melee weapons are a formidable force to reckon with. They carry a great punch in all senses and a great deal of satisfaction of dealing a blow to the cult. Personally I like how Far Cry 5 is not gender shy with both sexes appearing as cult or resistance. Also the option of me creating my character as male or female with clothing as I choose is a very nice touch by Ubisoft. By the time I was done playing the main story, side missions and all the wild activities, I jumped into arcade mode where I was challenged like no before, I also loved some of the maps, and certain maps where fun to play and some times hilarious. My gameplay was extended further by the arcade mode. Jumping back to play Far Cry 5 on April 3, 2018 I was welcomed by the live event "Well Done". This was fun and challenging to go through as it requires you to do certain task the unconventional way. It rewards you with Silver Bars (the in game real money currency) and also with weapons skins. You will also be rewarded for the global community achievement and progress with silver bars and clothings.
Performance wise, in order to detail my review the best way possible, I need to list my system specs and all settings that I turned on or off. I am running the game on i7 6700K 4-core 4.0Ghz CPU, GeForce GTX 1080 EVGA SuperClocked ACX 3.0 8GB Edition, 16GB DDR4 2133Mhz RAM, Windows 10, Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB, Ultra Settings (except Motion Blur), 1080p, my FPS on benchmark is ~100 frames per second. this is quite impressive for such a beautifully detailed game. The Dunia engine is but a modified Cry engine, however I played Kingdom Come: Deliverance which uses Cry Engine and my system reported less FPS during game play then in Far Cry 5 while Far Cry 5 handles explosions water particle physics and flights simulations. Therefore, I have to tip my hat to Ubisoft for the great optimization work as opposed to when Far Cry 3 was out.
Gold edition wise, the game gold edition provided me with the deluxe edition weapons skins and vehicles plus a whopping 50 BMG-like sniper rifle that I am glad to have and is so much fun to use. Also the contents were easy to locate and available just after you finish the prologue. I loved all the weapons skins I received and the clothing I received with it. However, after a while of playing I already received numerous clothings and weapon skins that I started to forget about the items I got with the gold edition. Nevertheless, they were good to have and the 50 BMG is still with me no matter what I will get later in the game, I love it sound, its weight in my character hands and the punch it delivers to enemies. Beside the gold skin on it is a reminder that I hold the gold edition of the game which is a nice touch in my opinion. To top all this up, you will receive the season pass that include all future DLCs for free with the gold edition. These DLC all promise to be stand alone DLC just like Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon was, so it is definitely something to look forward to.
Overall, I loved this game and I am looking forward for its DLCs that will come as I can estimate that they will be more or less like Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon. I cannot highly recommend this game enough especially the gold edition since you receive all the above mentioned clothing, weapons skins, special weapons, 50 BMG sniper and the season pass.
The icing on the cake for me? - They finally changed how the game works (No more climbing that annoying towers) among a slew of other neat things you can now do.
The graphics are VERY polished, and I have an old video card and the soundtrack is spot on.
The weapon management is very clunky at first but after about an hour or two, you get used to it and figure out how to work with it.
**Get the gold edition as it comes with the season pass for the same price if you were to buy it later, but you get some really cool looking guns to start the game with.**
t was just ok, had the Far Cry drug induced sequences which are a waste of time.
I've played all the games in the series, for me, this was no better or worse as far as the game play than the other games.
I'd have to say while I had fun, I wouldn't buy it again, and before I buy the next version of Far cry, I'm going to read the reviews and see if they've listened and fixed the story line issues.
Using Google -- search for "Far Cry 5’s Ending Is Pretty Bad" for a nice review of the products ending (note it has spoilers).
To be fair, the bad ending totally turned me off of the product, it was acceptable to that point.
Don't get me wrong, I have found myself enjoying the game.
Pros:
Graphics on PC are top notch and not to demanding
Upgraded vehicle system makes driving much better than previous games
AI isn't stupid. I haven't had any issues with hired guns running out and exposing my cover.
Voice acting is pretty damn good
Fun to explore
Cons:
I don't feel like I got very much out of buying the Gold Edition
Enemies have no response to getting shot. This is a big deal to me because until they're dead you feel like you have little impact with your weapons
Easy to lose focus on what you are doing
Sometimes you get hit from all sides by enemies. SO MANY you will not escape. You will die. This definitely feels like a bug.
